One of the best ways of experiencing a new country is seeing it through the eyes of a local. When you learn English in Malta, you will get a taste of the Mediterranean lifestyle and quickly adapt to living like a local. Here are a few of our insider tips from Maltese food staples to off the beaten track destinations to get you started.
Snack on pastizzi
A Maltese favourite food is the cheap, flaky, ricotta or pea stuffed pastizzi which can be found at pastizzerias on almost every corner of the island. Live like a local by enjoying a few pastizzis with a dark milky black tea as a quick breakfast or afternoon snack.
Enjoy a Cisk on the beach
Your time in Malta would not be complete without a few Cisks by the sea. Cisk, pronounced chisk (and not sisk), is Malta’s best-loved lager beer and something of a national icon. Pack a cooler with a few Cisks and enjoy a long summer day on one of Malta’s many beaches.
Get off the beaten track in The Three Cities
While tourists to Malta head to Mdina and Valletta, (link to 5 Sites to visit when studying in Malta) The Three Cities offers a glimpse into the authentic daily lives of the Maltese people. The Three Cities is made up of the three fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua. The best way to immerse yourself in the history and beauty of The Three Cities is by taking a harbour tour in a traditional Maltese boat.
Swim at the local beach
Għajn Tuffieħa, Maltese for “Apple’s Eye”, is one of Malta’s more secluded beaches surrounded by rocky cliffs and wild Mediterranean nature. Għajn Tuffieħa is quieter than neighbouring Golden Bay and is a local favourite. The red sand beach, turquoise waters and spectacular views are worth the 200-step descent!
Dinner and a night out in St Julians
Locals and tourists alike flock to the cosmopolitan seaside resort village of St Julians for a night on the town. The area is not short of fantastic places for dinner, drinks and dancing.
Take a weekend getaway in Gozo
During your time in Malta, don’t miss a visit to Malta’s sister island of Gozo. Beloved by locals as a weekend getaway, Gozo is a place to enjoy the true laid-back lifestyle of the Mediterranean. Take a full day cruise from Sliema or hop on the ferry connecting the islands and get ready to discover the idyllic island of Gozo.
