During these unprecedented times it seems that educators and students alike are flocking to the internet to manage their lessons online. This is not a new concept for inlingua as before COVID-19 changed the way we work and go about our everyday life, inlingua students had long been using Virtual Classrooms for their language training.
Our Director of Studies at inlingua Malta, has been looking closely at this new form of lesson delivery and has noted how similar it is to face-to-face and that learning happens at the same speed and frequency. We have asked David a number of questions to highlight these similarities to see whether they meet our expectations.
Can I still expect the same level of Interaction with classmates and teacher?
“Definitely! In a typical class here at inlingua, the teacher would do a number of things to get students to talk to each other as they work on their language tasks, including talking to a partner or in a group! This is all possible online too as the teacher can choose to pair or group students into separate ‘rooms’ so that they can work together on a task, the teacher can then visit the separate ‘rooms’ to discuss progress or answer questions’
Does the teacher have a white board so that learners can follow?
“Yes the teacher has more than a white board! The teacher can share anything that is on his or her computer with the rest of the class, and can also share a whiteboard to write on and learners to follow. Has the teacher at school ever asked you to come up to the board and write answers? That too is possible as the teacher can allow each learner to write their answers on the screen, or circle a word or draw a picture. Everything is possible.
Can we watch videos and listen to audio in a virtual class?
“Yes listening and visual comprehension exercises can also be done in class as teachers can play audio files and videos from the internet with the rest of the class – making our classes fun as we work on those important listening skills’
Do I need a book for the class?
“You do, but you don’t need the actual book in paper form – this form of lesson delivery helps the environment. The teacher is able to share with you our fantastic inlingua material on screen . You can use it online with the class as you progress from one unit to the next!”
So what is the overall difference from online to face-to-face lessons?
“Not much really except from the fact that we’re physically distant from one another and not in the same room and country. I really think that learners can continue to learn via this online platform and the way our teacher deliver lessons and I also think that in a few weeks’ time everyone will be hooked on this new form of learning!”
