Malta is not only just beautiful beaches, it is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites including the Megalithic Temples of Malta, the City of Valletta, and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. There are seven more sites on the tentative World Heritage list. While most holidayers to Malta come for the beaches and Malta’s crystal clear sea, they too often miss these world famous sites of cultural and natural importance. When you’re studying at inlingua Malta you will have the opportunity to get off the beaten track and check out these incredible sites for yourself!
The Megalithic Temples of Malta
The Megalithic Temples of Malta are said to be older than both Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Egypt, dating back to around 3600-3200 BC! There are a total of seven main temple sites in the Maltese islands. While the temple complex of Ġgantija in Gozo is the oldest of the seven, all of the sites are impressive in their own right. Our students find the temple complex of Ħaġar Qim in Malta to be a great day trip. Ħaġar Qim lies on a hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and Malta’s islet Fifla. Included in your admission to Ħaġar Qim, you will get to visit two sites as another impressive temple Mnajdra is just 500m away.
The City of Valletta
The City of Valletta is Malta’s capital city and as a whole forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its concentration of historic buildings. The locals call Valletta “il-Belt” (‘The City’) and is a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. Valletta is a fortified city with a perimeter of bastion walls thanks to the Knights of St John who built this following the Great Siege of Malta in 1565.
Start your journey on Merchants Street and then get lost down Valletta’s side streets and alleys where you will find great shops, restaurants and cafes.
Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric burial site with chambers dating back to 4000 BC. The Hypogeum consists of three underground floors and is believed to held the remains of 7,000 people. Inside visitors will notice red ochre wall paintings and carved features. To preserve this remarkable site, visitors are restricted in size and times of day. Only 10 visitors an hour for an a few time slots a day are allowed to pay visit. Book online a few months ahead of time if you intend to visit the Hypogeum during your time in Malta.
